The widespread support from police and Knesset members as well as the Minister of Justice’s efforts to free a convicted policeman highlights the depth of the racism within Israeli government ministries and law enforcement bodies. This type of support encourages the continuation of illegal police behavior, especially towards Arab Palestinian citizens of Israel.

THE SUPREME COURT OF ISRAEL UPHOLDS DISCRIMINATORY LAW PROHIBITING FAMILY UNIFICATION IN LINE WITH RIGHT-WING RADICALIZATION IN ISRAEL

On January 11th, 2012, the Israeli Supreme Court ruled to uphold the Citizenship and Entry in Israel Law, which strips thousands of Arab families of their right to family unification, thereby endorsing the extreme right-wing government’s racist agenda. The law was passed in 2003 and, despite being originally intended to be temporary, has since been annually renewed by the Knesset.

On Monday, January 2nd, 2012, the Knesset Constitution, Law and Justice Committee authorized amendments to the “Bar Association Bill,” which aims to retroactively cancel the Israel Bar Association’s selection of representatives in the committee to choose Supreme Court Justices.

THE MOSSAWA CENTER SEEKS ALTERNATIVE MEANS TO PROTECT ARAB YOUTH IN SAFED AFTER RECENT ATTACK

On the evening of December 14th, 2011, four Arab students were attacked by stone-throwers at the central bus station in Safed. This attack is not an isolated incident; over the past few months, Arab students have been the victims of racist attacks, such as an incident in March when students’ cars were burned. The Chief Rabbi of Safed, Shmuel Eliyahu, encourages and incites these attacks.
